An Interview With Nicki French

A lovely interview with Nicki French by your very own hi-nrg Bob

Nicki French, New Mardi Gras, Australia 2005

Q 1. I saw you perform at Manchester pride 2006 and you were amazing , any plans for any pride events this year ?

A 1. Thank you so much! I had a wonderful time at Pride last year – and all I’ll say is keep your eye on the Diary dates over the next few days! I’m hoping to be at Manchester Pride again, and I seem to be part of the furniture at Cardiff, so now the theatre show’s over, I’m able to do both of those!

Q 2. Any new record releases due out

A 2. Not just at the moment, but there is the possibility of a new, revamped version of one of my old songs from the first album – to be confirmed! I’ve been in discussions about recording some new material. Oh dear – again ‘watch this space’!!

Q 3. How important is you’re official website and websites like myspace to an artist like Nicki French?

A 3. Oh I think they’re very important. The Internet iSean amazing way to get your profile out there, and also keeps fanSeand interested parties aware of what’s going on. But then again, as everyone knows, I have quite a ‘hands-on’ approach to the websites, and like to be involved. A lot of artists are probably unaware they even HAVE a website, and certainly don’t participate, which I think is wrong. I quite often work out some of the songs I’ll do in my shows from fans’ comments or requests – and they’ll nearly always comment on whatever I wore, so I know whether or not to wear a certain outfit again!

Q 4. People like Hazell Dean , Angie Gold and yourself are legends of hi-nrg, which of the currents hi-nrg stars do you think are legends in the making

A 4. That’s a lovely thing to say – thank you! Hazell is a great friend of mine, and we talk regularly – I’ll make sure to tell her your comment! As for ‘legends’ in the making, well from what I’ve seen anyone that wants a ‘proper’ singer for their entertainment still seems to book Hazell, me and others from that era. I don’t really see anyone else coming through to be honest. The people booking know what they’re getting with us, as we are singers who want to SING, not mime, which unfortunately seems to be what’s encouraged more and more nowadays. You can’t be a ‘legend’ or ‘diva’ if you mime continuously – people need to know you CAN actually sing.

Q 5. Apart from you’re fab’ voice , what other talents do you have?

A 5. I don’t know if I’m actually GOOD, but I love home baking!! (How sad!) Seriously, during the theatre run, I was baking cakes all the time and taking them in for the cast and crew – none were ever returned! I also LOVE tennis, and can honestly say I’m 100 times better now than I was five or six years ago, when I started taking lessons (I still go once a week at least, rain or shine)! Thirdly, I’m quite good at wallpapering, and love DIY!

Q 6. And finally Nicki , do you have a message for you’re loving fans?

A 6. I just want to say a HUUUGGEEE thank you to everyone that has supported me, whether it’s from the beginning or if they’re a more recent ‘convert’. I would be absolutely nowhere without you all, and I would like to think that anyone that shows support to me knows that it is SO appreciated. I hope that support will continue through whatever I do in the future.

Special thanks to the lovely Nicki French for this interview . not only is she one of the best hi-nrg singers around , she is also someone who genuinely appreciates her loyal fan base .
